Improvisational theatre, also known as ‘Improv’, originates from the 16th century form of Italian theatre ‘Commedia dell’arte all’improvviso’ or ‘comedy of the art through improvisation’. In the 1890s, theatrical theorists and directors such as Konstantin Stanislavski and Jacques Copeau both heavily utilised improvisation to train actors, which resulted in the art gaining popularity across the globe.
